Wednesday 3/21/2007

Good morning students :)  If you have not finished yesterday's assignment please go to the Wednesday 3/14/2007
post and finish.  For those of you who have finished yesterday's
assignment please continue on with this one.  Today you will create
your very own homework blog for this class and then create two posts.
One post will be an introduction of yourself and the other will be a
report on a science related news article.

To get started click here to go to the blogger home page and click on the "Create Your Blog Now" orange arrow at the bottom of the page.  Follow the instructions.  They are very clear.  When it asks for a display name choose one that you are comfortable with everyone else seeing when you post comments.  Remember that this blog will be a professional/student blog so please use your name whenever possible.

After you have created your post you will need to write two different posts to your blog.

  1. Write a post to introduce yourself to the web in general.  Tell us where you come from and some interresting things about yourself we may now know.  This should be at least 5 sentences.

  2. Your second post should be about some science related article you find interresting.  There are links at the bottom of this post that you can use to look up science news.  Write a post containing a link to the article on the web, a paragraph summarizing the article and a paragraph about what you thought about the article.  To create a link you need to highlight the words in your post you want to link to and then push the the world button with the little chain link on it at the top of the page.  Then copy and past the url for the article into the little box that will come up.

Science News Sites:

Science News Online

 Science Daily

If you have time at the end of class you can spend it editing your profile and the appearance of your blog.  Make sure that if your blog does not already appear at on the class blog you leave a comment at the end of this post with your blog url in it.

Thursday and Friday 3/15-16/07

Today and tomorrow you will be studying about how atoms are made and the Periodic Table which we use to classify the elements. To get started you need to read pages 506 to 524 in the Physical Science book. After that you need to do two things:
  • Use some of the unlined paper provided by the sub and the drawing supplies to make a game that will teach another person in the class the following vocabulary words : Atom, Nucleus, Proton, Neutron, Electron, Quark, Atomic Number, Mass Number
Ideas for games could include a word search or crossword with clues, hangman game with clues, or a funny quiz. Make your game creative in some way. When you are done have the sub initial your game and then play it with another person in class. Turn the completed version of each game in to the inbox with the signature of the person who played it with you and the sub's initials.
  • Your second assignment is to begin the lab on page 525 in the book.
See the following example for some ideas.

List:
  • Sprite, Steak, Steamed Broccoli, Mashed Potatoes, Omlettes, Coffee, Pickles, Peach Pie....
Data Table (Remember this is only a sample. Yours needs to have at least 20 food items - extra credit for more - and at least 4 columns) :

Remember to return my supplies to the front of the room at the beginning of class.

Wednesday 3/14/2007

You should be in the computer lab today so here is your assignment. Create a public gmail account for yourself and post a reply to this blog entry with the following information (remember that each entry should have your name so that I can give you credit for your answer, and should be as complete as possible).

If you do not have a gmail account already click here to sign up for one. This will be your public email account. Just like you have nick names you allow your friends to call you when you will only let people you don't know you call you by your real name, you must have a public email address. This will be the address you will use for school and work purposes so choose your sign on carefully. Your email address should have your first and last name in it so that others can recognize your email and will not think that it is junk mail. You will also be using this email address to create a school blog (like this one) later on.

Use your new email address to post a comment (click on the comments link at the bottom of this post) to this blog entry with answers to the following questions. I will give "C" credit for complete answers but to receive an "A" or "B" grade for this assignment you must go above and beyond, giving information not called for or creating your own new information ....i.e. make your answers interesting or funny in some way. For each answer you must state your source which means cut and paste the address(es) of the website(s) where you got the answer. You also may not just cut and paste your answer. You must re-state it in your own words.

Questions (use the internet to look up answers to the following questions):
1. What are the three main particles inside an atom?

2. Explain kinetic theory using examples from the web.

3. Use kinetic theory to explain the behavior of gases as they react to temperature, pressure and volume changes.

Tips:
a. As you are working leave this page up so that you can always come back to it and open new tabs or windows for internet explorer to do your research or begin your gmail account in.
b. If you want to leave something up on a web site you are looking at but you also want to follow a link to a new page you should right click on the link and then click "Open in a new window" or "Open in a new tab".
